Diebold Accidentally Leaks Results Of 2008 Election Early

This is one of my major concerns over the election process. How can you trust a process which involves unsecure voting machines which don't leave a paper trail.

here in Australia, it's all done with paper and pencil. After being ticked off the electoral role (you can vote in any voting station in your electorate) you take your ballot papers (usually one for the lower house and one for the Senate) to a cardboard booth, mark your selections in pencil and place them in sealed boxes on your way out. The votes are then manually counted at a local counting centre and the results are usually all known that night.

I know that the USA has ten times the population, but it could use ten times the vote counters, couldn't it?
